Lala Paşa Camisi; Erzurum'da Osmanlı döneminde yapılan ilk cami özelliği taşıyan yapı, burada inşa edilen diğer Osmanlı camilerine de model olmuştur. Kanuni Sultan Süleyman'ın komutanı, Kıbrıs fatihi, Sadrazam Lala Mustafa Paşa; Erzurum Beylerbeyi görevini yürüttüğü dönemde, 1562 yılında camiyi yaptırmıştır. Mimarisi Mimar Sinan'a ait olan eserin yanında bir saray, bir de sıbyan mektebi yer almış, ancak bunlar günümüze kadar ulaşamamıştır. Lala Paşa Camisi; Şehzadebaşı, Sultan Ahmet, Eminönü Yeni Cami ve Yeni Fatih gibi İstanbul camilerinde uygulanan plan tipinde, ancak onlardan hayli küçük ölçekli olarak inşa edilmiştir. Ortada dört paye ile taşınan merkezi kubbe, dört yanda sivri kemerlerle desteklenen yarım çapraz tonozlar, köşelerde de dört küçük kubbeden oluşan merkezi planlı bir örtü biçimine sahip olan caminin iç mekânını iki sıra halinde 28 pencere aydınlatmaktadır. Alt sıradaki pencere alınlıkları üzerinde bulunan çiniler, şehrin Ruslar tarafından işgal edilmesi sırasında atılan kurşunlarla zedelenmiştir. Yapının kitabesi, yuvarlak ve mukarnaslı olan mihrabın üzerinde yer almaktadır. Pencerelerde bulunan hadisler, hat sanatından eşsiz örnekler sunar. Kare kaide üzerine kurulmuş olan cami minaresi, yuvarlak gövdeli ve tek şerefelidir. Beyaz taştan inşa edilen minare, kırmızı taşlı bileziklerle süslenmiştir. Caminin avlusunda, sekiz köşeli ahşap ve konik çatılı bir şadırvan yer almaktadır. Bu şadırvandaki sütunlar son derece güzel taş işçiliği ile bezenmiştir. Son cemaat yerindeki batı mihrabiyenin üzerinde, ters "T" şekilli mermer levhalar üzerine yazdırılmış ferman bulunmaktadır.1670 yılında yazılan bu ferman 4. Mehmed’in halka vergi muafiyeti getirdiğini anlatmaktadır. Tamamı kubbe ile örtülü son cemaat yeri de sivri kemerlerle öne ve yanlara açık bir mimari üslup gösterir. Lala Pasha Mosque

The Lala Pasha Mosque which is important for being the first mosque in Erzurum belongs to the Ottoman period, has been a model for the other Ottoman Period mosques in Erzurum. It was built by Lala Mustafa Pasha, the conqueror of Cyprus and Grand Vizier and also the Commander of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent when he was assigned to Erzurum on duty in the year 1562. There was a palace and Ottoman elementary school next to this building the architect of which was Sinan the Architect but they did not reach modern times. The Lala Pasha Mosque was built according to the plan employed in the mosques of Istanbul such as the Shehzadeh Mosque, Sultan Ahmet Mosque, and New Mosque in Eminonu, and the New Conqueror but with a scale much smaller than theirs. There is a central dome in the middle supported by four columns, semi-cross vaults on the four sides that are supported by pointed arches, and four small domes on the corners altogether creating a centralized plan and the interior of the mosque received daylight through 28 windows. The tiles on the frontals of the windows in the lower row were damaged by the bullets shot when the city was invaded by the Russians. There is an epigraph above the round mihrab with muqarnas. The saying Prophet Mohammad that are over the windows on the sides attract attention with their calligraphic work. The minaret of the mosque which is on the right has a circular body above a square base and single serefe (balcony). The minaret which was made out of white stones was decorated with bands made out of red stones. There is an octagonal wooden fountain with a conical roof in the courtyard of the mosque. The columns in this fountain have been decorated with extremely beautiful stone work. There is an imperial order written on the plates which are shaped like an inverted “T” above the western niche in the final gathering place. This order, written in 1670, explains tax exemption that Sultan Mehmed IV brought to the public.
